SCREEN-CLEANING |
![]() |
From the day your new screen sheet is installed the image quality is deteriorating. Airborne dust particles are drawn towards the screen by the magnetic field of the equipment behind it, and air conditioning systems help to pull this through the sheet, with the dust laying even thicker on screens which are raked back. Add to this the inevitable vandalism from such items as spit-balls, fizzy drinks, sticky sweets and gum and it becomes obvious why your screen sheet will need to be cleaned after a period of time in order to preserve good picture quality. To maintain good quality picture it is important to check your screens regularly and to ensure best results from our cleaning process it is critical to treat any screen vandalised (with, say, cola, ice-cream or other substances), as quickly as possible.
So how to clean? Cleaning is best left to the experts, using a cleaning solution which will not in any way damage the screen surface of matt white or any variation of a pearl (sprayed) screen sheet. It is vital to clean the entire screen sheet surface, not just spot-clean it. Cleaning only localised areas will leave visible patches. When exhibitors attempt to clean screens themselves they usually damage the screen surface and risk smudging the offending substance, making it even more noticeable. The screen is first dusted down, to remove all loose particles, and then sprayed with the specially prepared cleaning agent, which is wiped off using clean white towels. This process is repeated until the towels are coming off white – demonstrating that no surface dirt remains The screen is then sprayed with neutralizer, which ensures that no shine is left, and the screen can be used almost immediately. All exhibitors need do is to leave the masking/tabs open to their widest points and the cleaners’ lights on. It is in the interests of the cinema for a projectionist to shine a white light on the screen when it is finished, just to check that nothing which might be cleaned off remains, as cleaners lights are not always quite sufficient. It normally takes in the region of 1 - 2 hours per screen, depending on size, levels of dirt, and access (screens up to 10M can now be cleaned without the need for scaffold). When sheets become old and the PVC begins to naturally discolour the sheet needs to be replaced. We will be pleased to quote for both cleaning and replacement.
